Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can have different causes. Surgery is considered only after proper evaluation of the airway, sleep history, and non-surgical options.
Snoring is not always sleep apnea
Snoring can occur without obstructive sleep apnea, while sleep apnea involves repeated breathing interruptions during sleep. Diagnosis and severity assessment may require sleep testing.
Why evaluation matters
The obstruction may involve the nose, soft palate, tonsils, tongue base, jaw position, or multiple levels. Surgery is generally planned to match the anatomic site of obstruction rather than use a one-size-fits-all approach.
Treatment options
Depending on severity and cause, treatment may include weight management, positional therapy, nasal treatment, CPAP, oral appliances, or surgery. Surgery may be nasal, palate, tonsil, tongue-base, or skeletal depending on the case.
Expectations
Surgery may reduce obstruction or improve tolerance of other therapy, but it does not guarantee cure. Follow-up and objective reassessment may be needed.
Riskler and limitations
Riskler depend on the procedure and may include bleeding, infection, pain, swallowing difficulty, voice change, persistent symptoms, airway swelling, anesthesia risks, and need for further treatment.
