Functional Rhinoplasty and Septorhinoplasty
Functional rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty evaluates nasal airflow and external nasal structure together. The goal is a nose that breathes well and remains structurally stable.
What functional rhinoplasty addresses
Nasal obstruction may come from septal deviation, turbinate enlargement, nasal valve weakness, trauma, prior surgery, or a combination of problems. Functional planning looks at the airway as a three-dimensional structure.
Why appearance and breathing overlap
The external shape of the nose and the internal airway share cartilage and bone support. Reducing or narrowing the nose without support can worsen breathing; rebuilding support can improve both form and function in selected cases.
Consultation checks
A careful exam may include septum position, internal and external nasal valves, turbinate size, mucosal swelling, allergies, previous trauma, and symptoms during sleep or exercise.
Recovery
Congestion after surgery is common. Silicone splints or internal supports may be used temporarily. Breathing usually improves gradually as swelling decreases and the airway heals.
Risks and limitations
Possible risks include persistent obstruction, bleeding, infection, septal perforation, scar tissue, numbness, altered smell, asymmetry, and need for further treatment.
